Musician's Earplugs in Marietta, GA
Ordinary earplugs do not make music quieter. They make it muddy. Musician’s filters are the fix, and they are the reason working players wear protection at all.
IN SHORT
Musician’s earplugs use a tuned acoustic filter to reduce volume roughly evenly across all pitches, so music sounds the same, only quieter. Standard foam plugs cut high frequencies hardest, which is why they muffle everything. We take an ear impression in Marietta and fit filters in 9, 15 or 25 decibel strengths depending on your instrument and setting. Ready in one to two weeks.
Why the ordinary answer does not work
Foam and rubber plugs block high frequencies far more than low ones. The result is that cymbals, vocal consonants and string detail disappear while the kick drum and bass stay loud. Musicians take them out because they cannot judge tone or blend, and then they are wearing nothing at all.
A musician’s filter is a small mechanical acoustic device rather than a lump of foam. It attenuates the whole spectrum by roughly the same amount, so the mix you hear is the mix that is actually happening. You hear less of it, not a different version of it.
Which filter strength
Filters are interchangeable in the same custom shell, so if you play in more than one setting you can swap rather than buy twice.
| Filter | Typical use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 9 dB | Acoustic sets, orchestral strings, teaching, studio engineering | Gentle. Enough for long exposure at moderate level without losing detail |
| 15 dB | Most live work, rehearsal rooms, amplified bands, DJs | The workhorse. What most players end up in |
| 25 dB | Drummers, brass sections, loud rock and metal, festival stages | Heavy attenuation for the loudest positions on stage |
Who we fit these for
- Performing and rehearsing musicians of any instrument
- Drummers and brass players, who take the highest exposure on stage
- Sound engineers, DJs and venue staff
- Music teachers and band directors, who take it daily rather than nightly
- Regular concert-goers who want to still enjoy the sound
A word to band parents and teachers
A school band room is genuinely loud, and a director stands in it for hours a day, five days a week. Cumulative exposure like that does more damage than a handful of loud gigs. If you teach music, this is a professional necessity rather than a nicety.
How the impression works
The same five minute process for every type of custom protection we fit.
- We check the ear canal with a video otoscope first, since we cannot take an impression past wax or infection
- A soft foam dam protects the eardrum, then silicone is syringed in and sets in about five minutes
- It lifts out in one piece. Odd rather than painful, and nothing to recover from
- The laboratory makes your protection and it comes back in one to two weeks
- You come in to collect, and we check the fit and seal before you leave
Common questions
Will musician's earplugs muffle the music?
No, and that is the whole point of them. The filter attenuates high and low frequencies by roughly the same amount, so the tonal balance survives. Ordinary plugs cut treble hardest, which is why they sound muddy.
Which filter strength should I choose?
15 dB suits most live and rehearsal work. Drummers and brass players usually want 25 dB. Acoustic players, teachers and engineers often prefer 9 dB. Tell us what you play and where, and we will advise.
Can I change the filter later?
Yes. The filters are interchangeable within the same custom shell, so you can buy a second strength rather than a second set of plugs.
How loud is a rehearsal room, really?
Amplified rehearsal commonly sits between 105 and 115 decibels, and a drum kit peaks higher. At those levels the safe unprotected exposure is minutes, not hours.
Do I need custom molds, or are universal musician's plugs enough?
Universal filtered plugs are a real improvement on foam and cost much less. Custom molds seal better, stay put on stage, and are comfortable for a three hour set, which is why most working players end up in them.
