Why you cannot hear in restaurants, and what actually helps

By Mark Stevenson, Hearing Instrument Specialist · July 8, 2026 · 3 min read

IN SHORT

Difficulty following conversation in a noisy restaurant is usually the earliest symptom of hearing loss, and it can appear years before quiet-room hearing tests show much. Background noise masks the consonants that carry meaning, and separating a voice from that noise takes both good high frequency hearing and processing effort. Practical seating choices help immediately. A hearing test tells you whether something more is going on.

If there is one complaint we hear more than any other, it is this one. Home is fine. One to one is fine. Put the same person in a busy room and they are nodding along without following anything.

What is actually happening

Three things at once.

Consonants are quiet and high pitched

Vowels carry the volume of speech. Consonants carry the meaning. The difference between cat, cap and cash lives entirely in the consonant, and those sounds are both quieter and higher in frequency than the vowels around them. Age related hearing loss takes the high frequencies first. So speech stays audible while becoming less intelligible, which is exactly the experience of everyone mumbling.

Background noise masks precisely those sounds

Restaurant noise is broadband and speech-shaped, because it is mostly other people talking. It sits right on top of the frequencies you need most.

Separating voices is work

Picking one voice out of many is an active process. It uses the tiny timing and level differences between your two ears, and it uses cognitive effort. When the signal degrades, you compensate with concentration, which is why a noisy dinner leaves you genuinely tired. That fatigue is real and it is the reason a lot of people quietly stop accepting invitations.

Why your hearing test can look fine

A standard hearing test measures the quietest tones you can detect in a silent booth. That is not the same skill as understanding speech in noise, and the two can diverge. It is entirely possible to have near normal thresholds and still struggle badly in a crowd.

This is worth knowing, because people are often told their hearing is fine and conclude the problem is imaginary. It is not. It just was not what the test measured. If this is your experience, say so specifically when you come in, so speech in noise gets tested properly rather than assumed.

What helps tonight

  • Pick the room, not just the restaurant. Carpet, curtains, tablecloths and booth seating absorb sound. Hard floors, bare walls, high ceilings and exposed ductwork reflect it. A well reviewed room can be an acoustic disaster.
  • Book early. The same room at 5:30 and at 7:30 are different acoustic environments entirely.
  • Sit with your back to the room. Put the noise behind you and the faces in front of you.
  • Take the corner or the booth, and avoid the middle of the room, which surrounds you with noise from every direction.
  • Face away from the kitchen, the bar and the speakers.
  • Round tables beat long ones. On a long table you can only really talk to two people.
  • Ask them to turn the music down. Staff say yes more often than people expect.
  • Watch faces. Everyone lip reads to some extent, and it helps more in noise than in quiet.

What hearing aids do and do not do here

Modern hearing aids handle this better than they used to. Directional microphones prioritise what is in front of you, and noise reduction reduces steady background sound. This is the specific situation where the higher technology levels earn their price, because that is what the extra processing is doing.

They are not a perfect fix. No device fully separates one voice from twenty others, because that problem is hard even for normal hearing. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something. What good hearing aids do is move the difficulty from impossible to manageable, and cut the concentration cost enough that you still have energy at the end of the evening.

If restaurants are your problem specifically, say that at the fitting. It changes which device makes sense and how it gets programmed.

Where to start

The online hearing check takes five minutes and will give you an indication. A full hearing consultation here takes about 45 minutes, and is the only way to find out whether what you are experiencing is hearing loss, listening effort, or both.
