Protecting Your Hearing

Age-related hearing loss arrives whether you like it or not. Noise damage is entirely avoidable and entirely permanent, which makes it the only part of this you actually control.

You protect your hearing by controlling three things: how loud the sound is, how long you are exposed, and how far away you are. In practice that means turning headphones down to around 60% for no more than an hour at a stretch, wearing protection for machinery, tools and any gunfire, stepping away from loud sources, and giving your ears quiet time afterwards. Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and completely preventable.

Three levers, and you can pull any of them

Every piece of hearing protection advice is one of these three. Understanding that makes it much easier to judge a situation you have not been warned about.

Turn it down

The most effective and least popular option. Every three decibels of reduction roughly doubles the time you can safely be exposed, so a small change buys a lot of margin.

Shorten the exposure

Damage is a function of level and time together. Fifteen minutes with a leaf blower is a different proposition from two hours with one, and taking breaks genuinely counts.

Move further away

Sound intensity falls off sharply with distance. Doubling your distance from a point source cuts roughly 6 decibels, which halves the damage potential. Stand back from the speaker stack.

Headphones and earbuds

This is the exposure almost nobody counts, and it is the one the World Health Organization has warned puts over a billion young people at risk. A phone driving earbuds at maximum volume can deliver somewhere between 100 and 110 decibels straight into the ear canal, which is chainsaw territory with none of the warning signs.

The usual guidance is the 60/60 rule: no more than 60% of maximum volume, for no more than 60 minutes at a stretch. It is a rule of thumb rather than a law of physics, but it is a good one.

Children and teenagers

The exposure a fifteen year old gets is still with them at sixty, and they will not thank you now. Do it anyway.

After a loud exposure

If your ears ring or sound muffled after a concert, a range session or a day with a chainsaw, that is called a temporary threshold shift. It usually recovers within a day, which is precisely why people dismiss it. It means damage occurred. Recovering is not the same as being unharmed, and the effect accumulates across a lifetime of Saturdays.

What actually helps afterwards is quiet. The ear needs recovery time, so give it a genuinely quiet evening rather than another loud one. And if the ringing or muffling has not cleared within about 24 to 48 hours, that is worth a call rather than a wait.

Four things that are not true

Get a baseline while it is still boring

Prevention includes measurement. A hearing test when nothing is wrong gives you a number, and change is easy to see against a number and nearly impossible to judge against a memory.

Worth testing now if you work or play in noise, if hearing loss runs in your family, if you have ringing in your ears, or if you are past about sixty. It takes about 45 minutes.
